Preview: Daphni and Floating Points at Ministry of Sound, Sunday 26 November

As part of the new stripped-back ‘In Stereo’ series at Ministry of Sound, some of the most talented producers in the industry are arriving to share their work on the Ministry’s custom built Martin Audio six-stack system. The organisers, The Hydra, state that this surround-sound experience will focus on “the simplicity of artist and sound”. It is this poise and definition that is quickly carving out the Ministry of Sound as a space for electro-rumination: not just the ecstatic 4am twirling (although that too remains joyously present) but also a venue for the serious audiophile searching for the intricacies of sound and detailing, that make acts like Floating Points and Daphni so well-loved.

Both of these musical men come from unusual backgrounds. Daphni, a scholar of maths, cut his teeth at Imperial College London, while Floating Points became a neuroscientist following training in piano at Manchester’s Chethem’s School of Music. Their scientific backgrounds are evident when looking at the consideration behind the music set to feature during their live sets this weekend. Floating Points has specially remastered his new song ‘Ratio’ to give a maximised aural experience on Ministry of Sound’s Dolby Atmos rig. Its performance promises to provide a 3D soundscape controlled by a producer who made his reputation for providing the key to the ideal sound experience.

Daphni, AKA Dan Snaith, perhaps better known for his work as Caribou, has a set mixed with house bangers like ‘406.42 PPM’ and the escalating melodies of tracks like ‘Tin’. He specialises in refreshing the mechanics of the dance music that we know and asking us to explore new and groovy alternative avenues. To get you ready for the night I’d suggest listening to Daphni’s 45 minute Boiler Room set.

Word out there is that Daphni & Floating Points will play together from beginning to end. With no specific time given for the performance of ‘Ratio’, the flow of the night should be expected to be mellifluous and natural with the song announced through a visual display.
