Upcoming at the Jazz Café: Classic Album Sundays, Selectors Assemble, Herbie Hancock

February at Camden’s famous Jazz Café is looking pretty sexy.

Classic Album Sundays: Donald Byrd’s Black Byrd – Monday 5^th February

An intriguing series of performances organised by Jazz Café and Classic Album Sundays is set to begin in February, exploring how classic records ranging from jazz to IDM changed the face of music forever.

Each performance will consist of a celebrated modern jazz artist picking a favourite album and leading an ensemble in reinterpreting it in their own style. This first event sees Yelfris Valdés, visionary trumpeter for Yussef Kamaal and Daymé Arocena, approach Donald Byrd’s Black Byrd – a true classic of jazz funk from 1973.

Future albums will include the works of Miles Davis, and even Aphex Twin. Each performance will be preceded by an interview with the artist led by Classic Album Sundays’ Colleen ‘Cosmo’ Murphy, which will explore the artist’s personal reflections on the album’s greatness, as well as tracing its impact upon contemporary culture.

Selectors Assemble – Saturday 10^th February

Way at the other end of the Jazz Café’s repertoire is this unmissable club night. IG Culture – one of London’s best hip-hop producers, and legendary pioneer of the broken beat movement – is bringing Selectors Assemble back to the Jazz Café following a sold out event last October.

The collective of DJs, producers, and artists are renowned for their mixture of Detroit-style techno, Afrobeat, and – naturally – jazz. Consisting of IG Culture himself, K15, Henry Wu, and many more, the collective stay true to the communal music at the heart of the broken beat movement, but keeps things shuffling ever forward. These people know how to party.
