Last year’s demonstration saw around 10,000 people storming Parliament Square, making national headlines. The National Campaign Against Fees and Cuts (NCAFC) is hoping for an even larger number of demonstrators. London Student asked three students why they will be marching:

I oppose Tory attempts to turn the university into a private factory. The fight for free education and living grants is important, but the scope of our struggle must extend beyond these demands.
My experience of university has not been the marketed image of an open space to share and investigate ideas. Instead, as tuition fees have increased the burden on students they’ve also pressured lecturers to prioritise corporate platitudes of ‘transferable skillsets’ and ‘employability’ so that we are better equipped to compete in a precarious job market. By marching I hope to return the university from Tory privatisation to a place of learning and a space to organise.

The treatment of young people by the current government makes me incredibly angry, and that’s why I’m marching on November 4 for free education, as only education available to all with no barriers will empower our generation and future generations to do more to stand up for the needs and rights of young people.

I believe that students, especially those from low income backgrounds and international students, have been systematically attacked over the last seven years in the form of tuition fee increases and the lack of access to grants.
The monumental levels of debt we now face after leaving university are manufactured to force us into low-paid precarious work with few or no in-work rights, while also marketising higher education. The transformation of students into consumers has resulted in a lack of critical engagement with our syllabi, and a reluctance to support staff on strike. It’s exactly what the Tories want. So I’m marching to protest these great injustices, and to register my support for free education and living grants for all.
